Join historian Neal Graffy to learn the full story behind John Peck Stearns and his deepwater wharf.

It was Monday, September 16, 1872, was when the first ship tied up at John Peck Stearns’ new wharf at the foot of State Street. Prior to this date, ships had to pause a mile or more off shore while cargo and passengers were transferred to small boats and rowed ashore and back. It was a time-consuming, expensive and miserable experience. But no more! Stearns had built more than a wharf, this was the door that would open Santa Barbara to the world. For 150 years Stearns Wharf has endured storms, fires, earthquakes, changing times and the threat of bombing by the most dastardly of villains. A true survivor, it has overcome all that nature and man has thrown at it.

Kids can get their pictures taken with Santa (and receive a framed photo souvenir), sip hot cocoa, play in snow and make holiday crafts. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Families can then pick out newly-arrived trees at the Simi YMCA’s Christmas tree lot operated by the Y’s Men’s Club.

The cost of Breakfast With Santa is $15 per person ($20 for nonmembers). Children under three are free. Registration for the breakfast is required in advance. To purchase tickets, go to www.sevymca.org/breakfast-santa.

The YMCA will have about 850 Nobile and Douglas fir trees between 5' and 9' tall at its tree lot. The trees are grown in Oregon, harvested, and then packed in ice for their journey south to the Y. Once they arrive, they are unloaded by LDS Church missionary volunteers, given a fresh cut at the base, put in water and set out for display. Y’s Men’s Club members and volunteers staff the tree lot.

Proceeds from the tree sales go to organizations in the community, to underserved families as well as to the YMCA.

Christmas tree lot hours are 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The tree lot and Breakfast with Santa are at the Simi Valley YMCA (3200 Cochran St., corner of Galena Ave. and Cochran St.). If interested in becoming a Breakfast With Santa sponsor, contact Dani Hutchison at dhutchison@sevymca.org.
