  • Clarence Mattei - Portrait of a Community: A talk by Erin Graffy about the artist

For over forty years Clarence R. Mattei captured in pen and pencil, charcoal, and oil the portraits of notable figures on the local, national, and international stage. The artist had roots which went deep into the historical soil of Santa Barbara County. In 1886, his father, Felix Mattei, founded Mattei’s Tavern, in Los Olivos when the stagecoach was still the primary means of overland travel. Here Clarence grew up with his four brothers.

Although Mattei moved comfortably in the sophisticated salons of Paris and in the drawing rooms of the privileged in New York City the pull of his rustic childhood home remained strong, and he eventually returned to Santa Barbara. Here he became a key figure in the city's burgeoning art colony. Erin Graffy draws her own portrait of this talented artist, by utilizing private archives and interviews with family and friends.

About the Speaker: Erin Graffy de Garcia is the author of a number of books and articles on the history and culture of the Santa Barbara area.

  • Join the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics for a special evening at SOhO in downtown Santa Barbara!
Particles even smaller than atoms are the building blocks of matter, manifestations of energy, and might even describe gravity; they affect everything from technology to the evolution of our universe. What are these mysterious fundamental particles like, and how do they interact with each other? Scientists are engaged in a massive effort to construct a theory of particles that answers those questions, and sophisticated computational and mathematical techniques have become an integral part of their toolkit. Over dinner and drinks, KITP Postdoctoral Scholar Jessica N. Howard will share one way machine learning and math originally designed for moving dirt might help us answer the fundamental question: what is our universe made of?
    Doors open at 5PM
    Seating is first-come, first-served.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase, and there is no drink minimum or cover charge.

  • The Museum Marketplace is happening on Saturday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History, 956 Maple Ave. in downtown Carpinteria.

Became a passion for me,” reported the artist.

The booth operated by the museum, Granny’s Attic, offers collectibles, vintage cameras, bric-a-brac, household items including quilts, kitchenware, chinaware, and much more with prices starting at 25 cents.

For more information, call (805) 684-3112, email info@carpinteriahistoricalmuseum.org, or visit carpinteriahistoricalmuseum.org. The next Marketplace is scheduled for Aug. 26.

  • As the world’s foremost forest ecologist, Suzanne Simard has reshaped the way we understand the life and growth of plants. In her groundbreaking work Finding the Mother Tree, Simard explained how trees interact and communicate using below-ground fungal networks. Her research established the existence of “mother trees” that play an important role in the flow of information and resources in a forest. The concepts she developed have influenced everyone from earth scientists to artists – think James Cameron’s Avatar and Richard Powers’ The Overstory. Join Simard for a dazzling journey through the unseen world going on above our heads and under our feet.
