Join the Ventura County Interfaith Community at 7:00 PM on August 29th as President Greg Jones and his wife Lori Jones of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints guide us in a discussion of the role of temples in the lives of congregants.

The Ventura Stake Center (3501 Loma Vista Road, VENTURA, CALIFORNIA 93003-3101) will host the event.

The Museum Marketplace is happening on Saturday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History, 956 Maple Ave. in downtown Carpinteria.

Known for its eclectic vendors, the outdoor fundraiser is the place to shop for specialty foods, handcrafted gifts, toys, plants, antiques, furniture, jewelry, clothing, and musical instruments, to name just a few of the treasures.

Vendor and Carpinteria High School graduate Jill (Stoyanoff) Johns will be selling her popular gifts from the sea creations. “What started out to be a summer project for myself and granddaughter, learning to wrap the sea glass making necklaces, earrings, greeting card and bags, plus fun art projects using Scrabble titles and sea glass on driftwood. Became a passion for me,” reported the artist.

The booth operated by the museum, Granny’s Attic, offers collectibles, vintage cameras, bric-a-brac, household items including quilts, kitchenware, chinaware, and much more with prices starting at 25 cents.

Admission is free to the Marketplace. Hot dogs, cold beverages, and snacks will be available for purchase. Musical entertainment includes Mavis Hansen and the Ukulele Jammers.

Calling all beach lovers! Be part of the solution to ocean pollution on Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 23rd.

The largest volunteer effort in California, Coastal Cleanup Day is the day to give back to the ocean, beaches, and creeks that make Santa Barbara County such a wonderful place to live. Get outside, enjoy nature, and remove marine debris from our beaches and waterways.

Volunteers of all ages can participate at any of the 2023 cleanup sites. Pre-registration is not required, but is encouraged. Everyone who pre-registers will automatically be entered in a drawing for prizes!

Each site will have a captain on hand to provide necessary instructions and supplies. You can bring your own gloves, buckets, and other reusable cleanup supplies to lessen the plastic footprint of this event.

Last year volunteers picked up over 8,000 pounds of trash. Let’s see if we can beat that record!
If you can’t make the cleanup on the 23rd, we encourage you to clean up any time during the month of September and your cleanup data will be included as part of the Coastal Cleanup Day results!

Coastal Cleanup Day is brought to you by Explore Ecology and our partner the County of Santa Barbara Resource Recovery and Waste Management, with support from Project Clean Water and the Cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Solvang. The California Coastal Commission organizes the statewide event and the international event is organized by the Ocean Conservancy.

Show the beach some love! Join us for a cleanup on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach. Meet in front of the Watershed Resource Center (blue building) to sign in.

You are welcome to bring your own clean up supplies or use ours. We’ll have buckets, plastic bags, and reusable or disposable gloves. Cleanups will be self-guided and can include the beach, the parking lot, or the open spaces surrounding Arroyo Burro.

Be sure to visit the Watershed Resource Center during cleanup hours to see interactive displays about local watersheds from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Participants will receive a coupon for a free cup of chowder from the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.

Santa Monica Playhouse is proud to present two additional summer performances of film, television and stage personality Stogie Kenyatta’s acclaimed NAACP Award-Winning solo show about African-American artist-activist Paul Robeson. Robeson – internationally renowned actor, recording artist, concert singer, football player, All-American athlete and Phi Beta Kappa Society laureate at Rutgers University, was witness to the artistic wonders of the Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz/Be-bop era, the horrors of the slave trade, the shame of the Holocaust, McCarthyism, blacklists, racism and oppression.

Robeson’s life’s work celebrates our common humanity as he fought globally for social justice. “Armed with nothing more than the strength of his convictions and his vision of a world where men live as brothers, his message was his life," says Kenyatta. “He shows us that in spite of our differences, we still have more in common than we do in conflict.” Jamaican born and Brooklyn bred Stogie Kenyatta has been seen on everything from sitcoms and film to soap operas, from Bernie Mac and Jake and the Fat Man to HBO’s Tyson (Co-star) to The Bold and The Beautiful. He co-headlined a USO comedy tour in Tokyo, Japan and Okinawa. “The World Is My Home – The Life of Paul Robeson” had its first performance at the National Civil Rights Museum and has become the number one show on the American college scene, honoring a great American hero.

The Danish String Quartet is joined by Finnish cellist Johannes Rostamo for the eagerly-anticipated capstone to their international Doppelgänger Project. In part IV, the Danish pairs Schubert’s String Quintet, frequently cited among the greatest of all works of chamber music, with a new piece by renowned British composer Thomas Adès. Part III of the project was heralded by The New York Times as “ensemble music at its purest – a consensus interpretation, rendered selflessly in service of the group as instrument.”

Combining thrilling vocals with deft guitar work and a flair for fashion, Fatoumata Diawara is a musical sensation out of West Africa. Singing in Bambara, the language of her native Mali, along with French and English, Diawara delivers biting social commentary and plays stinging electric guitar solos that ride on her band’s sinuous funk-influenced beats. Her latest album, London Ko, was produced by Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) and reflects a boldly eclectic approach that remains firmly rooted in her heritage.

Between Land and Sea: Saving Our Oceans to Save Ourselves
National Geographic photographer Cristina Mittermeier has dedicated her life to safeguarding the world’s oceans and inspiring millions to do the same. With a degree in biochemical engineering in marine sciences and training in fine art photography, she founded the International League of Conservation Photographers to drive conservation efforts through storytelling. She co-founded SeaLegacy, a nonprofit that works at the intersection of art, science and conservation to rewild the ocean for the benefit of biodiversity, humanity and climate stability. Born in Mexico, Mittermeier spends half the year living in Canada and the other half at sea aboard her research catamaran SeaLegacy I. Join Mittermeier as she shares images and stories from her travels and explores how inextricably linked we are to that most sacred element – water.
