  • Continuing its celebration of coastal living, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) presents The Lure of Lighthouses & Dancing Waves, an exhibit featuring more than 35 photographs of lighthouses and waves by the renowned and Emmy Award-winning surfing photographer and videographer Dan Merkel. The lighthouse photographs include images of lighthouses from near and far—from Cape Elizabeth and Cape Hatteras on the East Coast and Point Loma and Point Pinos on the West to Portugal and Australia. The images are accompanied by Dan’s breath-taking photos capturing waves throughout the world. Beginning on Thursday, January 26, the exhibit will be on view in SBMM’s Gallery and Munger Theater through August 27, 2023.

    About Dan Merkel
Dan Merkel began his career just taking pictures of his friends. When he was hired to work for various surfing magazines in the early 70s, surfing was just being recognized as a sport with international competitions and professional surfers, such as Shaun Tomson. Being an experienced surfer himself, Merkel was able to get in the middle of the action with his cameras, which gave his images more immediacy and energy. In order to do this, Merkel designed much of his own waterproof housing that protected his equipment and allowed him to follow focus. Beginning in the late 1970s and continuing through the 1990s, Merkel switched his focus to commercial cinematography and became an Emmy-winning filmmaker working on classic surfing films including Free Ride, Big Wednesday, Endless Summer II, and many others.

Merkel licenses his images through AFrame Media and markets his prints online at https://www.photoprintingpros.com/collections/dan-merkel-photography. Many of his images also appear on his Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/danmerkelmedia/about.

    About SBMM
Founded in 2000 inside the harbor’s historic Waterfront Center Building (formerly the Naval Reserve Building), the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum creates exhibits and hands-on, educational experiences that celebrate more than 13,000 years of maritime history in our region—from Chumash culture to today’s surfing scenes and environmental movements. Nearly 8,000 square feet of gallery space showcase special presentations and changing displays culled from the museum’s artifact collection, all dedicated to instilling love and respect for our Santa Barbara Channel, for the people who make their living on its waters, and for the abundant marine life that calls these waters home.

SBMM is located at 113 Harbor Way, Suite 190, Santa Barbara, CA 93109. Visit sbmm.org or call (805) 962-8404 for details.
  • In honor of Black History Month, which begins on February 1, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) will present two showings of “Keeping the Light: The Story of the Bravery, Heroism and Courage of African American Lighthouse Keepers and Lifesaving Service” as told by Harriet Tubman, portrayed by actor, director, and producer Christine Dixon, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. The first performance from 3:30-5:30 pm is designed for children, and the second performance from 7:00-9:00 pm is for adults. Following each performance there will be additional time for questions. Cost is $35 for museum members, and $50 for members of the public. Tickets at: https://sbmm.org/santa-barbara-event/. About Chris Dixon
Chris Dixon is an award-winning actress best known for portraying Tubman in the short film Era and in one-woman dramatic performances. For the last ten years, Dixon has been booking, directing, and portraying Harriet Tubman in what was supposed to be a four-contract performance of the one-woman show “Harriet Tubman Herself.” The original concept for the show was developed by Hollywood book and theater critic Morna Murphy Martell, the songs were composed by Ralph Martell, and the original costume was created by the late designer and hair stylist Keith Benedict. That initial limited run has continued for over ten years and more than 690 performances across 200 cities, 28 states, two countries, and one national park, garnering her numerous awards along the way. Dixon’s shows have had her portraying Tubman at various stages in her life and include her singing many well-known spirituals associated with the Underground Railroad.

  • The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, which is located in the city’s beautiful harbor, is looking for people to join its next 11-week docent training program, beginning Saturday, January 14, from 9:00-10:30 a.m. on Saturdays through March 25, 2023.

Do you enjoy meeting and talking with people from Santa Barbara, all of California, across the U.S., and around the world? Do you want to share your love and knowledge of our harbor and coast with visitors? Do you have at least three hours a week to volunteer? Then consider becoming a docent at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM). The first class on January 14 is an introduction to the museum’s docent program and how to interpret exhibits. The public is invited to attend the first class to decide if they want to continue and become docents at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.

Docents study and learn about the native Chumash people, commercial diving and fishing milestones, the museum’s flagship Ranger, the Channel’s military history, and Santa Barbara as the birthplace of the environmental movement. Be part of a great volunteer team that supports SBMM’s mission to create quality exhibits and educational experiences that celebrate the Santa Barbara Channel and illuminate our rich connections with the sea.

    • Help cultivate insightful discussions about the past and future of our coastal community.
    • Answer visitors’ questions and help them understand exhibits.
    • Make connections between the museum and visitors from around the world
    • Maintain and explain exhibits, and assist with special events, exhibit openings, art receptions, and community festivals.

According to Guest Services Manager Jesse Baker-Lorelli, “Docents also enjoy the social environment of the Museum, make new friends, and gain a feeling of fulfillment.” Confirming his comment, docent Diane Kirchner said, “I have to admit that I love being in the museum. I learn something new every day, and it’s fun to share tidbits with our guests. They are always so appreciative.”
