Ventura County Hires New Head Of Public Defender's Office From Within Its Ranks

Ventura County launched a nationwide search for a new Chief Public Defender, but it found the person it ultimately hired from its current ranks.

Todd Howeth has been a criminal defense attorney since 1984, and has been serving as Ventura County’s Assistant Public Defender. He will succeed Steve Lipson, who retired this month after more than three decades with the county Public Defender’s Office, including the last seven as Chief Public Defender.

The Public Defender’s Office has more than 50 attorneys, as well as support staff.

Lance Orozco has been News Director of KCLU since 2001, providing award-winning coverage of some of the biggest news events in the region, including the Thomas and Woolsey brush fires, the deadly Montecito debris flow, the Borderline Bar and Grill attack, and Ronald Reagan's funeral.
