There’s disappointment on the Central Coast over word that Vandenberg Air Force Base didn’t make the cut for consideration to be the headquarters of the U.S. Space Command.
The Pentagon is in the process of selecting a location for the military branch, which was reestablished in 2018. The Air Force narrowed the list from about two dozen locations to six. They include Texas, Florida, Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nebraska.
Getting the headquarters would have been a big financial boost for the Central Coast. It would have brought about 1400 jobs to the area, which would have meant hundreds of millions of dollars in additional revenue for the region.
Vandenberg’s boosters contended the base was a logical choice, because of the billions of dollars in infrastructure already there to support military and civilian space missions. What will happen next is still a question mark. The next administration will be in place when it’s expected a final decision will be made.
