COVID-19 vaccine remains in short supply on the Central and South Coasts.
Vaccinations are still mostly being focused on medical workers and those in care facilities. The good news is that many of the highest risk people in the region, seniors with pre-existing conditions in congregate care facilities, have already received shots.
At University Village in Thousand Oaks, officials say some 97% of residents, and about 75% of employees have been vaccinated. Seniors at the facility say they are excited about the ability to be protected.
UVTO officials say about a dozen residents, and 18 employees have been diagnosed with the virus during the pandemic. Through safety precautions, they've been able to prevent a large scale outbreak among the 500 residents, and 170 plus employees.
Ventura County Public health officials say the county is still in the first tier of vaccinations for healthcare workers and care facilities. While the state has cleared the way for vaccination for those 65 and older, the county isn't getting the vaccine to make it happen.
County Public Health Officer Dr. Robert Levin says they are now set up to do about 24,000 vaccinations a week, but are only getting enough vaccine to do 10,000.
