South Coast University Builds Math Lab To Help Underrepresented Students

Aug 15, 2019

A university on the South Coast is building a new math lab. The goal is to help underrepresented students succeed.

California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks is creating a 700-square-foot Math Center inside Pearson Library.

Dr. Gabriela Cazares of Cal Lutheran says the project is being funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of underrepresented students who earn teaching credentials.

“A lot of students of Latino background tend to fall in to what we call 'gateway courses.' So, those tend to be the non-credit courses. It’s very important to make sure that students are able to access the resources so they can continue moving forward in their education,” she says.

The Center will feature glass walls with mounted white boards and white board tables that students can write on. It will have student tutors and a full-time math specialist. All students will have access to the lab.

It’s expected to open in October.
