A newly-released report by Santa Barbara County prosecutors says Sheriff’s deputies were justified in fatally shooting a man responsible for three murders.
It happened in December of 2018. Deputies were called to a home in Orcutt after a woman visiting a friend found her unconscious, and covered in blood in a bathtub.
Officers arriving at the scene say they were confronted by David McNabb, who was armed with a rifle and knife. After a standoff, a beanbag gun was used to try to stun McNabb.
Deputies say the man was knocked down, but then swung his rifle towards them.
The officers opened fire, wounding the man. As they tried to provide aid, they say McNabb tried to stab one of the deputies, who then shot him again. The 43 year old man died at a hospital.
Deputies then discovered the bodies of McNabb’s sister, mother, and her mother’s fiancée. Detectives say he had stabbed and beaten to death the three people.
