Ventura County Jail Officials Say Inmate Dies More Than Week After Being Discovered Unconscious

Ventura County Jail officials say an inmate found unconscious in his cell more than a week ago has died.

Deputies at the County’s Pre-Trial Detention facility say Steven Johnson was discovered unresponsive in his cell December 15th.  They say the 37-year-old Ojai man was being housed by himself.

Deputies and jail personnel started emergency medical care.  He was taken to a Ventura hospital, and later transferred to another for more specialized care.  Johnson was pronounced dead on Sunday.

An autopsy is pending.  As is standard practice, the death is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Bureau.
