Ventura County’s top prosecutor has announced he’s going to retire.

District Attorney Greg Totten is stepping down after 38 years as a prosecutor, including 18 years as Ventura County’s DA.

He and his office have dealt with a number of major cases, including the Golden State Killer, who pled guilty to 13 murders and a string of other crimes.

Totten oversee a staff of about 280 people.  He’s retiring from the county DA’s post in January, but he isn’t leaving the profession.  He’s going to be the new Chief Executive for the California District Attorneys Association in Sacramento, which represents the state’s DA’s on issues like legislation.
