Authorities are trying to figure out why a SUV veered off of Highway 101 in Ventura County and crashed into a freeway offramp, leaving the driver dead.
It happened just before 11 Monday night on northbound Highway 101 at California Street in Ventura. CHP investigators say the SUV hit the cement offramp wall, overturned, and caught on fire. Ventura firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze.
The 40 year old Carson man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name hasn’t been released.
The crash caused a huge backup on the northbound 101 for more than two hours, with only one lane open while the debris was cleared.
