The remains of the Santa Barbara based excursion boat "Conception" after an onboard fire killed 34 people in 2019

This coming holiday weekend marks the first anniversary of a huge tragedy in the Channel Islands.

It was on Labor Day last year that the Santa Barbara based excursion boat “Conception” caught on fire. 34 people trapped below deck died in the early morning fire.

The City of Santa Barbara’s Waterfront Department is hosting a virtual commemorative event Wednesday.  The 7 a.m. ceremony will include the dedication of a plaque to those who lost their lives.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

NTSB officials say they will soon be releasing some of the information they’ve gathered.  They will hold a hearing in October to formally release their report on what they believe led to the deadly fire.

You can find a link to the memorial event here.
