A bill by a Santa Barbara legislator intended to help close the race, and gender pay gap in California received a key approval today.
The State Assembly passed SB 973. It would require companies with 100 or more employees to submit data annual to the state detailing compensation by gender, race, ethnicity, and job category.
Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara authored the bill. The intent is to give state agencies the information they need to identify disparities, and to take enforcement action.
The idea is that it would also encourage companies to analyze, and correct the issues they identify through the data gathering process. The bill now goes to the State Senate for a final vote.
