Ventura County Man Gets Jail Sentence For Sweepstakes Phone Scam Targeting Seniors

A 66-year-old Oxnard man is headed to jail after trying to scam some South Coast residents.

He and his team told elderly Ventura County residents that they’d won a sweepstakes.  The catch? To claim their winnings, they had to send the scammers a deposit first.

Prosecutors say Dennis Dean Varadin used that phone scam to steal about $170,000 from ten elderly victims. But now, the sextegenarian Oxnard man is headed to jail.

Varadin pled guilty to felony grand theft, receiving stolen property, and money laundering charges.  He’s been sentenced to 18 months jail, as well as 38 months of supervised release.

In addition, Varadin has been ordered to pay back more than $130,000 in restitution to his victims.
