An effort by a Santa Barbara legislator to help fix the race and gender pay gap in California has received a key approval in Sacramento.
SB 973 would require businesses with 100 or more employees in the state to file an annual pay data report. The report would provide the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing with key information on compensation by gender, race, ethnicity, and job category.
Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara authored the legislation. Jackson says it’s hard to fix pay gaps if you don’t see them, which is the object of the proposed data requirement.
The State Senate passed the bill, which is now in the hands of the State Assembly for its consideration.
