Rough Weekend For Highway 101 In Conejo Valley, With Two Full Closures

A propane truck fire closed Highway 101 in the Conejo Valley for several hours Sunday morning

Many travelers found themselves spending a lot more time in the Conejo Valley than they planned over the weekend, after two separate incidents closed the 101 Freeway.

On Saturday night, a chase invoving a van which started in San Bernardino County ended when the CHP deployed spike strips on Highway 101 near the Ventu Park offramp in Newbury Park.

The driver stopped, but then refused to surrender for about two hours.

It led to a full freeway closure, and massive traffic backups.  The driver finally gave up at around midnight.

Then, at around 5 a.m. Sunday, a propane truck caught on fire on the 101 near the Hampshire Road turnoff in Thousand Oaks.

The inferno led to a full freeway closure which lasted around eight hours.  Traffic was routed around the scene on surface streets.

The freeway started to reopen at around 1 p.m.  No one was hurt.
