LA County Leaders Weigh In On Cleanup Of Nuclear Test Facility In Ventura County

Los Angeles County Supervisors have joined the call for NASA to shoot high when it comes to cleaning up a former rocket lab and nuclear test site in Ventura County. NASA released a draft supplemental environmental impact statement for soil cleanup at the Santa Susana Field Lab, outside of Simi Valley.

The report contains several alternatives. But, LA County Supervisors say with radioactive and chemical contaminants in the soil, dust, and groundwater, NASA needs to stick to the alternative which calls for the highest degree of cleanup.

The officials say that the strongest plan is the only one which meets a cleanup agreement between NASA and the state approved in 2010. Cleanup of the former testing and research facility has been a hot button issue for years, with some nearby residents blaming the pollution for causing serious health issues.
