Firefighters battle the McMurray Fire with air tankers in Santa Barbara County on Monday

Mopup work continues on a 200 acre brush fire which caused a big scare this week on the Central Coast. The McMurray fire started Monday afternoon, at one point causing the shutdown of northbound Highway 101 outside of Buellton.

Some ranches northeast of the city were evacuated for a few hours. Firefighters stopped the growth of the fire by sunset Monday, but rugged terrain has made it tough to fully contain.

It’s currently at 85% containment, with full containment predicted for 8 a.m. Saturday.

No structures were damaged.

Friday was a long, hot day for firefighters working the incident. They picked up an estimated 15,000 feet of fire hose used to battle the blaze. The cause of the fire, which is believed to have started as a series of small blazes, is still under investigation.
