New Program Helps Feed Pets Of Those In Need On South Coast

Dee Dee’s Dog Spot is a Ventura business which caters to dogs, with everything from dog grooming to doggie day care. In addition to their regular clients, they try to help some dog owners who live outside the box. They and their pooches are homeless, which means the dogs can sometimes go hungry. The Humane Society of Ventura County is launching a new program to try to help, called Pantry for Paws.

Greg Cooper is the Director of Community Outreach for the Humane Society in Ventura County.

He says they are setting up spots around the county where people can pick up free dog food. Cooper says they are already installing dispensers.

An $8,000 dollar grant made startup of the program possible, but the Humane Society will need to get additional grants or donations to keep the doggie food pantry program going.

The program isn’t just about helping the homeless with dogs. The goal is also to help others struggling financially, like seniors on fixed incomes.

For now, it’s oriented towards dogs, but if there are instances where someone needs help with a cat, the Humane Society will try to step up. Members of the public can help by dropping off unopened bags of dry dog, or cat food at the Humane Society’s Ojai headquarters, or by going online and ordering pet food through the Humane Society’s Amazon wish list.
