Ventura County Man Gets Life Without Parole Sentence For Death Of Bystander During Gang Shootout

A Ventura County gang member will spend the rest of his life in prison for his role in a shootout which left a woman in a nearby home dead. Mark James Martinez was involved in a March, 2014 exchange of gunfire behind two rival gangs in Santa Paula.

Ventura County prosecutors say a shot fired by the 36 year old man went into a home in the neighborhood. 39 year old Norma Elizalde was struck, and killed by the stray bullet.

Martinez was convicted of first degree murder and shooting at an inhabited dwelling. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, plus a consecutive 65 year sentence.
