Target Practice Blamed For Starting Brush Fire Which Caused Scare In Ventura County

(Ventura County Fire Department photo)
Firefighters battle what was called the South Fire outside of Fillmore Sunday.

Fire investigators say someone conducting target practice on private property accidentally started a brush fire which threatened some buildings in Ventura County.

The South Fire burned just over 130 acres of land Sunday.  The fire started just after noon off of South Mountain Road, west of Fillmore.  The fire grew quickly, briefly threatening some structures.

But, Ventura County firefighters aided by helicopters and air tankers were able to protect the structures.  By six p.m., they said the growth of the fire had been stopped.  The firefighting efforts were hampered by rugged terrain in the area.  Crews will be on the scene overnight doing mopup work.

Three firefighters were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.  One suffered an ankle injury, and two others were treated for dehydration.
