A new Ventura County Grand Jury report says the county’s schools could do a much better job of explaining their sex education program to parents, so they can decide whether they want their children to participate.
The report notes that every school district in the county has implemented, or is in the process of implementing the state mandated program for seventh through 12 grade students. The program includes an HIV/AIDS education and prevention element.
The Grand Jury study says districts aren’t giving parents enough information to decide whether to have the children participate. It says most of the districts fail to address alternative educational activities for the children of parents who opt-out.
The report also concludes most districts don’t provide a simple opt-out form for parents to use if they decide to take that step.
