A Ventura County grandmother has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to helping to cover up the killing of her granddaughter. Prosecutors say three year old Kimberly Lopez of Oxnard died in June of 2015, after being abused by her mother, Mayra Chavez.
The child’s body was taken to Mexico, and was never found. Chavez was convicted after the little girl’s father, Omar Lopez, pled guilty to child endangerment and testified against Chavez.
Investigators say the grandmother, Maria De Jesus Lopez, lent the couple her car, and gave them money so they could get rid of Kimberly’s body in Mexico. They say the Oxnard woman also worked to cover up the death from authorities.
As part of her sentence, Lopez was ordered to have no further contact with her daughter.
