Old Military Artillery Shell Danger Prompts Proposed Closure Of Area In Los Padres National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service is proposing to close a small area of the Los Padres National Forest because there may be unexploded military artillery shells in the area. The Army used Dry Canyon as an artillery range in the 1940’s. The canyon is north of Ojai, off of Lockwood Valley Road in Ventura County.

The Army Corps of Engineers did a survey of the area, and found some explosives, and explosive debris in the area.  The proposed shutdowns include the Dome Springs Campground, some trails in the area, Dome Springs Road, and a portion of the Chumash Wilderness area near Dry Canyon.

The Forest Service is accepting comments on the proposed closure, which would remain in effect until the Corps of Engineers can clear the explosives from the site.
