A man who was Ventura County’s Superintendent of Schools for more than two decades has died. Dr. James Cowan was elected to the post in 1969, and served six terms in office before retiring in 1993.
He helped oversee the establishment of career education programs in the county, as well as the formation of four new school districts. Cowman also fostered programs like the Academic Decathlon, and the County Science Fair.
There’s no word on the cause of death. Cowan was 87 years old.
