British Actors, Educators Help Bring Shakespeare Into South Coast Classrooms

Students get a crash course on Shakespeare at San Marcos High School, particiapting in readings of "Romeo and Juliet."

One of Shakespeare’s most famous works is being brought to life in a Santa Barbara County high school classroom. All this week, a team of actors and educators from London’s legendary Shakespeare’s Globe Theater has been holding workshops for students in the Santa Barbara and Goleta School Districts.

In Sean King’s ninth grade English Class at San Marcos High School, Margo Gunn, with the Globe Theater, is walking the teens through Romeo and Juliet. Gunn says they are using some of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the classroom program.

Educators say the idea is to get kids excited about subjects like English in an unconventional way.

The four Globe Theater team members are visiting more than two dozen schools in the region, ranging from preschools to high schools. They are also doing workshops for some teachers, to help them incorporate Shakespeare’s works into classroom programs.
