Authorities Identify Ventura County Search & Rescue Volunteer Killed; Two In Critical Condition

Authorities have identified a Ventura County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team volunteer who was killed while helping victims of an accident.

They say Jeff Dye was killed while three other team members were injured – two critically -- after a car struck them.

It happened Saturday morning on I-5 at Vista Del Lago, which is about 30 miles north of Santa Clarita.

The team of volunteers from Fillmore was heading to Mt. Pinos for a training exercise.

"These are highly trained, highly skilled people. But they are volunteers. So, they have their full-time jobs, but they drop everything when the phone rings and they go out there and put their lives at risk to save other people," said Sergeant Eric Buschow.

Two team members are in critical condition at a hospital while a third was discharged.
