Bill Introduced To Honor Officer Who Died As A Result Of Borderline Bar And Grill Attack
A Ventura County legislator introduced a bill to name part of Highway 101 after a law enforcement officer who died as a result of the Borderline Bar and Grill attack. The legislation calls for naming Highway 101 from Hampshire Road to Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks the Sergeant Ron Helus Memorial Highway.
Helus was one of the first officers to reach the scene of the November 7th attack in Thousand Oaks, which left 11 victims dead. The Ventura County Sheriff’s sergeant was wounded by friendly fire as officers were trying to stop the gunman, and died from the injury.
Democratic Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin of Thousand Oaks introduced the resolution to honor Helus by dedicating a portion of 101 to the fallen officer. The section of 101 is next to the place where the attack occurred, which was also the place where years earlier Helus had proposed to his wife.
