After String Of Storms On Central, South Coasts Crews Work To Clear Debris Basins In High Risk Areas

The Central and South Coasts made it through the trio of storms which brought sometimes heavy rainfall to the region without serious problems in brush fire burn zones. Since the storms, crews have been busy clearing debris basins and creek beds to prepare for the next storms.

In 2017, the Thomas Fire roared through the hills surrounding Casitas Springs. The town came through the fire intact, but the bare mountains around the community pose a huge debris flow risk.

Doug Jones is Pastor of the Springs of Life Church, on Nye Road. The church is built at the base of a mountain slope. They’ve dug massive berms to try and divert debris flows, and protect the church.

It worked well last week, with crews returning to clean out the berms to prepare for future storms. The pastor says the types of storms we’ve had so far have been perfect, bringing needed rain but not so much at a time that it causes flooding.
