Evacuation Orders In Effect For Some Thomas, Whittier, Sherpa Brush Fire Burn Areas In SB County

Visible moisture map for Western U.S. as of midday Tuesday

Evacuation orders are in effect for parts of some brush fire burn areas in Santa Barbara County.

The orders  went into effect at 10 a.m. Tuesday for some areas impacted by the Thomas, Whittier, and Sherpa brush fires. National Weather Service forecasters are concerned we could see local heavy rainfall at times which could trigger debris flows. They say we could see one to three inches of rain on the coast and inland, and up to four inches in the mountains.

A Red Cross Shelter has been set up at the Goleta Valley Community Center, and the Earl Warren Showgrounds is providing temporary homes for displaced large animals, like horses.

The mandatory evacuation orders impact specific areas, and are not blanket evacuations for Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria.  You can find an interactive map of the area here.

The rainfall is expected to taper off Tuesday night.

A third storm is expected Wednesday night and Thursday, but most of the heaviest rainfall from that system is expected north of Point Conception.
