State Legislature Passes Two Bills Intended To Block Offshore Oil, Gas Development

The State Assembly has passed two bills intended to try to block new oil, and gas development in federal offshore waters.

Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara, and Democratic Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi of Torrance introduced the legislation. The bills would ban new pipelines and other infrastructure in state waters needed to support oil and gas development in federal waters further offshore.

The legislators hope passage of the bills would make it impractical for oil companies to pursue of the offshore projects. The legislation was prompted by the Trump Administrations recent moves towards reopening some offshore waters which have been closed to oil and gas projects for decades.

SB 834 and AB 1775 now go to the Governor for his consideration.
