Suspicious device removed from backpack in Isla Vista

A South Coast police station was the scene of a scare, when something which resembled a bomb was found in a backpack.

An Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District employee found an abandoned backpack in a park Wednesday morning. They took it to the Isla Vista Foot patrol. When deputies looked inside, they discovered what they thought was a pipe bomb.

The building and some nearby homes were evacuated. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to the scene.

But, experts determined what was thought to be a bomb was actually some batteries taped together with some wires attached. Investigators are trying to determine the source of the device.
