The final weekend of the 2018 Ventura Music Festival features one of America’s most acclaimed new chamber ensembles.

Matt Landry says the members of the Akropolis Reed Quintet met a decade ago, as music students at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. They decided they want to perform chamber music with a different sound, with all reed music.

Akropolis brings a new twist to classics, as well as introducing original music. They’ve commissioned more than 30 works from composers around the world.

If you met members of the ensemble, you might almost think they were members of an indie rock band. They have a young, energetic feel. The ensemble is a non-profit, and spends much of its time on educational efforts.

Akropolis will perform in Ventura as part of the Ventura Music Festival closing weekend. The performance includes a mix of classic, and new music. There’s a tribute to Leonard Bernstein, and the classic An American In Paris.

The quintet is set to perform at 8 p.m. July 20th, at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center.
