Special Wheelchairs Make Some Santa Barbara County Beaches More Accessible

They look like a cross between a dune buggy, and a wheelchair with huge oversized tires. Now, they are making some popular Santa Barbara County beaches accessible to those who use wheelchairs.

Santa Barbara County received a state grant for some special wheelchairs with special wide wheels which allow people to roll across the sand without getting stuck.

The all-terrain chairs are available for use at Arroyo Burro Beach, Goleta Beach, Guadalupe Dunes, and Jalama Beach.

Use of the wheelchairs is free, but advanced reservations are recommended. County Parks officials say while the extra wide tires make it easier to roll a wheelchair across the sand, it’s recommended that at least one other person come along to help the chair user.
