Santa Barbara Legislator's Bill To Educate Students About Fake News Passes State Senate

The State Senate passed a bill by a Santa Barbara County legislator intended to help students learn how to find news from credible sources.

SB 947 would establish an advisory committee under the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to develop educational materials on media. It would also create plans for educators to implement the instructional tool.

The bill was authored by Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara. Jackson says with fake news spreading false information online, it’s important to equip students with the knowledge to be able to distinguish fact from fiction.
