Grand Jury Report Says Ventura County Jails Still Overcrowded; Concern Over State Juvenile Facility

Ventura County jails remain significantly overcrowded.

That’s one of the conclusions of a new Ventura County Grand Jury report. The report says the county’s jails are in good order, but are consistently over capacity.

A $61 million dollar project to add more than 60 beds for chronically and mentally ill inmates in the county is scheduled to be completed in 2020, which is expected to provide some relief.

The report says there are issues with the state’s Ventura Youth Correctional Facility. It contends the state facility fails to meet minimum standards for safety, repair, and cleanliness. The report suggests that with a significant drop on juvenile crime in the county, there are hundreds of unfilled juvenile beds which could potentially be repurposed.
