City Council Recall Efforts In South Coast Community Apparently Fail

A recall effort targeting the mayor of a South Coast city, and three city council members has apparently failed. Some vote by mail and provisional ballot have yet to be counted, but it appears the four Oxnard City Council members being challenged will retain their seats by significant margins.

The recall effort needed a simple majority to remove the mayor, and three council members.

Mayor Tim Flynn got a 54% yes vote to retain his seat. Councilmember Bert Perello got a 59% yes vote, Carmen Ramirez a 58% yes vote, and Oscar Madrigal a 58% yes vote. Voter turnout was very low. The recall effort was sparked by a controversy over the city approving steep wastewater rate hikes.

City officials say major improvements are needed to the decades old infrastructure. But, a group of people who thought the hikes were too much launched court challenges, and the recall effort.
