Firefighters are continuing to mop up a brush fire that’s now been burning for more than a week in the Channel Islands.
Containment is now up to 80% on the fire which started March 27th on Santa Cruz Island.
The blaze was triggered by a prescribed burn pile of debris, which flared up and spread to nearby brush. It started near the Nature Conservancy Ranch on the island, but the ranch wasn’t threatened.
More than 50 people were initially evacuated from the islands, but evacuation orders have since been lifted.
Only one small isolated outbuilding has been destroyed. At its peak, nearly 100 firefighters battled the fire, but most of them have since been sent home.
