Authorities Identify Foreign Exchange Student Killed In South Crash Crash Involving Uber Car

Authorities are identifying a foreign exchange student who was riding in an Uber when she was killed in a crash on the South Coast.

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s officials say 19-year-old Justine Van Ginderachter of Belgium was a passenger in an Uber that collided with another vehicle early Friday morning at Hollister Avenue and Storke Road in Goleta.

Investigators say the woman was one of two passengers in the Uber, and they both were not wearing seatbelts. Ginderachter was thrown from the vehicle and died at a nearby hospital. She was living in Santa Barbara as part of the Education First program. The other passenger in the Uber and the driver and one of two passengers in the other car suffered minor injuries.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors, and both drivers are cooperating with investigators.
