Work officially kicked off Friday on construction of a new, nearly 50,000 square foot science center at a South Coast university.

California Lutheran University is building a new three story complex on its Thousand Oaks Campus.

The building will include 12 labs focused on teaching, and eight dedicated to research. It will connect to the nearly three decade old existing walkway through a skybridge.

The addition will more than double the size of the university’s science facilities. University officials say the number of science majors at CLU has more than doubled in the last decade. Plans call for the $30 million dollar center to be completed in the fall of 2020.
