Authorities are trying to figure out why an SUV drifted onto the wrong side of a Santa Barbara County highway, leading to a head-on crash which left three people dead.
The Sunday afternoon collision involved two SUV’s just outside of New Cuyama. CHP investigators say a SUV being driven westbound on Highway 166 crossed into the eastbound lane, causing the crash.
The driver of the westbound vehicle was a 19 year old Santa Maria man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A Kern County woman, and a Northern California man in the other vehicle were also killed in the crash. The names of the three people haven’t been released yet.
