A Santa Barbara County non-profit is helping to provide shelter for some of the hundreds of thousands of people impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
The non-profit is called “ShelterBox USA,” and it provides tents, and other essential supplies like blankets and lamps so people who lose, or are displaced from their homes have a place to stay.
In the case of Hurricane Harvey, the agency has used some of its tents to create “Shelters In A Shelter,” to provide some privacy for the thousands in massive evacuation centers. ShelterBox President Kerry Murray says the shelters in a shelter give people in the mega-shelters privacy for everything from AA meetings to a place for mothers to nurse infants. In addition, the Santa Barbara non-profit has shipped hundreds of its traditional tent supply kits so families can have a place to stay with some privacy.
The agency is gearing up for more shipments to Texas as needed, and is also preparing to help potential victims of Hurricane Irma headed towards Florida.
The non-profit has provided emergency aid in more than 100 countries since it was founded in 2000, and works with Rotary International in disaster relief efforts.
