Man Gets 15 Years To Life Sentence For Driving Car Which Killed Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy

A man convicted of driving a car which struck, and killed a Ventura County Sheriff’s deputy has received a 15 years to life sentence.

Kevin Hogrefe was convicted of second-degree murder, and fleeing the scene of an accident in the death of deputy Gene Kostiuchenko who was struck and killed along the Lewis Road onramp to Highway 101 in Camarillo.  The deputy was walking back to his patrol car after an unrelated traffic stop when he was hit.

Prosecutors say Hogrefe’s blood alcohol was around three times the legal limit at the time of the October 2014 crash. The now 27 year old man led law enforcement officers on a brief chase before crashing, when he was then arrested.

The deputy left behind a wife, and two sons.
