Program Brings Mental Health Education To Central, South Coast Elementary School Students

"Mental Health Matters" program being offered in a class at Santa Barbara's Roosevelt Elementary School

One in five teens will be diagnosed with some form of mental illness during their lifetime.

An innovative program offered in some Central and South Coast schools is teaching kids about mental illness. The hope is they’ll recognize the signs and symptoms so they can not only tackle it, but not get caught by the stigma often surrounding it.

The locally created "Mental Health Matters" program is expected to reach about 1600 sixth grade students on the Central and South Coasts this year, and those involved with the effort are hoping to eventually make it available nationwide.
