South Coast Community Celebrating Plans For New School

A South Coast community is celebrating plans to start work on a new elementary school campus, which will replace an existing one which is more than six decades old.

Oxnard’s Elm Elementary School has been serving the community since 1948, but the outdated, overcrowded facility can’t handle modern classroom technology. Many of the classes for the school’s 700 students are held in portable classrooms. Staff members, students, and community members Friday are celebrating the kickoff of work on New Elm Elementary School, which will be built on the current nine plus acre school site.

The estimated $24 million dollar project is funded through a 2012 school bond measure, along with state grants. Plans call for construction to start next year, with the existing campus to stay in operation until the new one is complete.
