Environmental Groups Challenge Federal Government Over Offshore Oil And Gas Fracking

Some environmental groups are threatening to up the ante in their efforts to block the controversial use of fracking off the California coastline, including in the Santa Barbara Channel.

In May, the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management cleared the way for offshore well stimulation treatments like fracking and acidizing to get to oil and gas deposits. The Environmental Defense Center and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper say the ruling violates the Environmental Protection Act. They contend the agency failed to consult with wildlife agencies about potential impacts on more than two dozen threatened and endangered species.

The oil and gas industry says the process is safe, and has a proven track record. The two groups sent a notice of intent to sue to the federal government, which is a precursor to a possible lawsuit.
