No Holiday Weekend For Crews Cleaning Up Ventura Oil Spill

More than 29,000 gallons of oil spilled in Ventura County's Hall Canyon June 23rd

It’s a holiday weekend for many people, but not for those involved in continuing efforts to clean up an oil spill in Ventura.

An estimated 29,000 gallons of oil spill June 23rd in the hills northwest of downtown Ventura.  A problem with a valve on a crude oil pipeline is being blamed for the spill in Hall Canyon. Firefighters quickly blocked the oil in a barranca, so it never had a chance to reach the ocean. Vacuum trucks were then used to suck up what was a small lake of oil. But, crews are now dealing with contaminated soil, rocks, and plants.

About 150 people are continuing to work through the holiday weekend on the cleanup effort. There’s still no word on when it will be complete.

Officials with Crimson Pipeline, which owns the line, say it was down for maintenance at the time of the accident. An investigation is underway into exactly what occurred.
