It was an extremely hot day for firefighters trying to contain Santa Barbara County’s Sherpa brush fire, but they again made major progress. They were able to keep the nearly 7900 acres of land in the mountains west of Goleta from major expansion, and containment is at 54%.

With full containment projected for early Thursday morning, officials announced plans to end most mandatory evacuations Wednesday morning. El Capitan Canyon will remain closed until Thursday, as will parts of Refugio Canyon. No homes have been lost.

Firefighters did lose some of their air support today to a pair of new brush fires burning in the mountains outside of Los Angeles.
