Volunteers Pick Produce At Local Farm To Feed Hungry

Volunteers pick oranges during a harvest at a family-owned farm in Somis.

Nearly 200 volunteers spent time over weekend on the south coast picking produce to help the hungry.

On Saturday, locals gleaned for oranges at a family-owned farm in Somis.

Christian Cummins was among the volunteers, and together they picked more than 20,000 pounds of oranges.

"It's just crazy to think about how much you're helping the community by just simply preventing this fruit from falling and rotting," he said. " You're feeding so many people."

The fruit is being donated to Ventura County’s regional food bank, FOOD Share. This food bank serves nearly 75,000 needy people per month.
